One liter of water is equivalent to one kilogram of water. However, this may vary slightly depending upon what substance you are measuring. For example, petrol, wine and milk may be more or less dense than water, meaning that, although you may measure out one liter of the liquid in a jug, they may weigh more or less than one kilogram - if the liquid is more dense than water, then one liter of the substance will weigh more than one kilogram. On the other hand, if the liquid is less dense than water, the liquid will weigh less than one kilogram. In order to calculate the density of a liquid, you should multiply the mass of the fluid (i.e. Its weight in grams or kilograms) by the volume of the fluid (i.e. How many liters of fluid you have). Therefore, it stands to reason that, in order to work out the mass of your fluid in kilograms, you should multiply the density of your liquid by the volume of it, which is measured in liters. The density of a liquid can be affected, although only marginally, by the temperature of the liquid. Most liquids become less dense as the temperature increases, although the density of water is actually at its highest when the temperature is between 0˚ Celsius and 4˚ Celsius.

A liter is an imperial unit of measurement which describes the volume of a fluid. Liters are commonly used in fields such as cooking and construction. In Britain, petroleum gas is sold in liters, rather than in gallons as it is in America. On the other hand, a kilogram is a measurement of mass, and describes how much an object weighs. Kilograms are more commonly used to measure solid objects, where liters are used to measure liquids. Kilograms are divided into increments of one gram. There are 1,000 grams in a kilogram.
