Mathematical expressions are meaningless without some rules for their evaluation. The Order of Operations is the set of rules we use.

You can make up your own rules, but that wouldn't help you communicate with someone who had made up a different set of rules for their own use. A standard set of rules helps us all save time, money, and the inconvenience associated with wrong answers.
