This equation can be easily solved by collecting like terms. To do this arrange the x values and the integers on opposite sides of the equals sign to find a value for x.

8x + 4 = 6x + 5  Shift the 6x across the equals sign so it becomes - 6x

8x - 6x + 4 = 5  Do the same but in the opposite direction with the 4, it becomes - 4.

8x - 6x = 5 - 4  Now the like terms have been collected we can simplify the equation.

2x = 1  Now we can divide the equation through by 2 to find a value for x.

x = 1/2

Now check your answer by placing our value for x back into the original equation.

8(1/2) + 4 = 6(1/2) + 5  Multiply out the brackets and simplify

4 + 4 = 3 + 5

8 = 8  This proves that our original answer was indeed correct.
