The exact year of the discovery of algebra is quite difficult to say, but it is believed that the system was originated in 1800BC.

Algebra is supposed to be originated in Babylon where they developed a system of arithmetic which was quite advanced. With that system they were able to calculate in algebraic fashion. The system made them calculate all the solutions for class of problems, which today are solved only by linear equations, indeterminate linear equation and quadric equation.

The word algebra came from an Arabic word 'al-jabr' which means reunion and the word was taken from a book called 'The book of Summary Concerning Calculating by Transposition and Reduction'. The book was written by a Persian mathematician named Muhammad ibn Musa al-Kwarizmi in 820.
