All high school students will, at some point, have to write an experimental research project. A good topic will vary depending on what the student is interested in, has a good background knowledge in and feels comfortable writing about. The student will need to think about all of the topics they have recently studied in school and which one stands out in particular as interesting or something that they could expand on. Try to think about general areas of interests, such as; television, film, computer games, music and see how any of these could be related to an experiment.

For example, if you wanted to carry out a research project about film, you could look at how CGI effects are created and their economic effect. High School experimental research projects are more difficult. At younger levels it was possible to produce cardboard devices but in High School the project is a lot more dependent on the student's theory and method. If you are really struggling to think of a research topic for a High School student try some from the list below that can be found in more detail at http://chemistry.about.com/od/sciencefairprojects/a/sciprohigh.htm.

• Can a black light detect invisible stains?
• Does the level of Vitamin C in orange juice change over time?
• How effective are natural mosquito repellents?
• Does light affect the rate at which food spoils?
• How do different fertilizers affect the way in which plants grow?
• What conditions affect the ripening of fruit?

All of these experimental research topics are ones that can be studied in the classroom and at home. Doing detailed experiments and taking photos as you go along can help add an extra touch to the presentation of your project. Try to choose something that interests you so that you do not run the risk of getting fed up with it half way through.
