The CNA test is a course that lasts around six weeks. After this the student will be qualified to take the national certification examination for patient care technicians. Some work under the careful eyes of nursing or medical staff to provide basic patient care. This work can include assisting with patient care, planning and assessments such as recording vital signs, height, weight, input output, collect and test specimens, report and record patient’s condition and patient treatments.
Other features to the course include assisting patients with nutritional needs, check delivery food trays, assist with feeding the patient if necessary, and refill water and ice. All this is necessary in order to maintain the patient’s health and well-being.
There are a number of students who use the typical PCT training and knowledge as a stepping stone to further they medical career and become a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or a registered nurse (RN).
Clinical job duties of the Patient Care Assistant may include a selection of the following: Discontinuation of IVs, clean and irrigate lacerations, setting up a rapid infuser, hepafiler setup, answering phones and assisting with patients who are in critical condition.
They may also be responsible for copy charts for admissions, splint assistance and taking tests or performing a phlebotomy.
The PCT provides a general standard of basic nursing care on assigned patients as delegated by the RN, LVN or LPN and completes other tasks where required.
