There are various differences between living and non-living things. Firstly, living things are made up of the living material or the protoplasm while non-living things are made up of dead material. Secondly, living things can respire while non-living things cannot respire. Thirdly, living things can reproduce while non-living things cannot reproduce. Fourthly, living things can move or locomote while non-living things are motionless. Moreover, living things show all of the features of life like taking in food, excretion, sensing etc but non-living things cannot even response to the changes around them.

Living things need food to stay alive while non-living things do not take in food. In addition, living things can move or they show locomotion, growth but non-living things do not show such feature. On the basis of these characteristics we can separate living things from non-living.

Living things have to be able to  perform  at least 1 out  of 7 life processes.   Growth, respiration, movement, sensitivity, excretion, digestion and reproduction.   Non living things can do none of these functions. If they could only perform 1 of them they would be classed as a living thing!

Non-living things are that do not breathe, move, feed, excrete, etc, example of this are plants. Although they do make food by photosynthesis, make young plants but still they are not 'Living'.

Living things are that who breathe, move, feed, excrete, reproduce and so on, for example Animals and humans.

A complicated question. To understand the difference between living and nonliving lets tackle the question - what's life?
In its simplest form life is nothing but a series of chemical reactions. Scientists call 'Viruses' as the link between living and non-living. When a virus exists in atmosphere its just a chemical molecule. But when it comes into contact with a host, the chemical molecule starts reacting. That's the sparkle of life. And the inherent characteristic of life seems to be 'Selfishness' - a strong desire or urge to exist and replicate. So life can be defined as ' A series of selfish chemical reactions intended to keep and propagate a particular molecular structure'. Those series of chemical reactions can last for a second as in the virus or can last a whole life time as in humans.
Any object that exhibits this characteristic is a living thing and anything that does not is a non-living thing.
