Yes, it is something from the 14th century written in alliterative form. At least the version I read. There are other versions, both in poetry and prose forms.

Gawain is recorded in ancient texts as Gwalchmai (yes, honest). The Arthurian legend places him in the 6th and/or 7th century AD. He is one of only three of the knights/characters mentioned in the legend for whom there is independent evidence.
