I suggest you use Word Office and right click an adjective and replace it with a synonym they give you. It's a great way to see how you can increase your vocabulary in a story.

Read, then read. Then read, then read some more. Be close to a dictionary for any words that you might not understand. Then read a bit as well.

There are many things you can do to expand and increase your vocabulary. Practice and patience is always the best method, so try to find a few things that you enjoy doing, and start a routine where you learn a few new words each day.

I've started learning German, and I have a daily meeting with a German-speaker based in Switzerland, so I try to boost my German vocabulary by finding a new phrase to say each morning during our meeting.

It's a fun little routine for keeping motivated to learn more, but to get a real grasp of the language and widen your vocabulary, you could also try any of the following:

  • Join a book club
  • Spend a few minutes each day reading a dictionary or thesaurus
  • Play Scrabble online
  • Read as much as you can. Especially books that are considered part of the "literary canon" - Shakespeare is a good place to start, he is said to have invented many words and phrases we use today.
