In the Book Thief, how does Liesel's brother die?

Liesel's brother was very sick and when he was on the train to be adopted by Hans and Rosa Hubermann, he passed away, his eyes open and a little trail of blood running down his nose.... Liesel let her mother know that Werner had died and in the movie she screams on the train. The train dropped Mrs. Meminger, her daughter, and her dead son in the snow and they held a small tiny funeral for Werner.
