I would bring pencil and paper and my lunch and put it all in a backpack, along with a few personal items.
My school told us that they don't want us to bring anything on the 1st day. But I like to bring my lunch and I don't want to just be carrying around a lunch box. Do you think it would be okay for me to bring a backpack?
They can't do anything about it :o Maybe they had something planned and that's why? Either way, it should be fine c: They shouldn't get mad.
Ask first, make sure you can bring your backpack only if the school allows it, if so put your lunch in the backpack.

Thanks for the answers. Turns out I was just needlessly stressing and overthinking, as usual. Most of the school brought their backpacks so I wasn't the only one.
