There was a band and a movie but this is the general definition.

Hocus pocus is a generic term that may be derived from an ancient language and is currently used by magicians, usually the magic words spoken when bringing about some sort of change. It was once a common term for a magician, juggler, or other similar entertainers.

Thought is that it may have derived from Orchus Bochus a Roman demon or god of the underworld, punisher of broken oaths. He was depicted as a bearded hairy giant. In Greek mythology he was Horkos  (oath) who personifies the curse inflicted on anyone who swears a false oath. Also associated with Dis Pater, a god of the underworld.
