If you are talking about worldly then:

I will NEVER forget September 11, 2001.... But I wish it never ever happened. :0(

But if you are talking about in my family personally then I always love to remember my wedding day and the births of my four children!!! :0)

I hadn't thought of our personal history but, you're right, those are dates worth remembering. (I bought my first umbrella on our wedding day. It bucketed down, but stopped raining during the ceremony. :D)

None of us over here could believe what happened on 911, Corey. I can only imagine what it must have been like in the US.

Diana's death was certainly a tragedy. She brought life to a jaded, outdated monarchy which may survive another couple of lifetimes because of her personality which lived far beyond her shirt life. She was truly a candle in the wind.

My very first memory is of JFK's funeral . I was 20 months old. I have seen Nixon's fall and the whole Watergate scandal .  The Iran hostage crisis started my senior year of high school .  The bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, and both attacks on the World Trade Center . And now what has to be the worst choices for a US presidential election .

On the upside, I have seen the moon landings and the fall of the Berlin Wall .

Good list, Ancient. Lots of variety. Y2K was an interesting choice. A disappointment for me. I went to a function with too many old people: they all went home about 12:15. Mrs Didge and I would have been happy to greet the dawn. :(

I had to work that night. Officials were afraid all the security systems would fail. From midnight till dawn myself and three others were racing around the city resetting security systems etc.

It as a valid concern, of course, but eventually came to nothing. Still, the precautions had to be taken.

Dear Didge,

I was born into war...

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, re-taking the Philippines ("I shall return") when I was two weeks old. In Europe, the Battle of the Bulge when I was eight weeks...and I was not quite one year when Nagasaki-Hiroshima happened.

So THAT's why you and I hit it off, Virginia. When the bombs dropped on Japan you were 8 weeks and I was 8 years old. Synchronicity at work again. Sort of. ;-)

I prefer not to answer my own questions but, like everybody else, I'm reminded of so many unpleasant historical events that happened since I was born in 1937. But it wasn't all bad and I wanted to list some of the others. (I won't mention any that have already been listed.)

The old British Empire was replaced by a commonwealth of self-governing "dominions". More freedom for all with less dependence on mother England.

The establishment of Israel created a homeland for the Jews. Controversial? Of course, but a rare historical landmark.

The further development of telecommunications, and eventually the Internet, gave all of us much more knowledge about what was happening.

Giant leaps forward in civil rights including the overthrow of South Africa's apartheid regime.

Glasnost ... Which may have been a very mixed blessing.

The rise of the European Union.

Extraordinary advances in medicine... (eradication of smallpox, for instance, the Salk vaccine for polio, heart surgery, organ and limb transplants, and so on.)

...and technology.

It's been an amazing time to be alive.

Every government and corporation is composed of individual human beings.

I think this is the principle: The future of humankind is determined by the poverty of the human mind and the fertility of the human body

History will never remember most people, of course, but it's the tiny people who provide the firmament in which the stars shine.
