Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. [1] It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines.
The engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices and more.
There are a number of training courses, which give those who are keen on a career in mechanical engineering an opportunity to complete a qualification in the industry. One notable course is the N3 Learnership. Which basically acts in the same way as an apprenticeship? The N3 training programme operates across the South Africa region and a number of companies take on students to work with them whilst studying.
These placements are usually arranged through a college as companies will often sign-up to receive students who are studying for their N3 certificate. Rather than approaching companies it is probably better to speak with a college directly who will be able to offer you some further information. Find out where your local Technical College is and arrange to speak with them about what aspect of training you wish to pursue. The careers advisor at your local college will have details of all the local companies which sign up to N3 training schemes.
