Cells need to keep a perfect surface area to volume ration to ensure the transport of materials in and out of the cell. If a cell is too large, it has more volume compared to it's surface area; meaning oxygen does'nt get into the whole cell fast enough, and debris doesn't get out of the cell fast enough, and it can die.
