Put the fraction in original form, so the 2 5/8 will b read as 21/8 and the 1 3/4 is 7/4. The next step you have to do is just add the two using any method you know for adding fraction, but for now, I will use cross multiplication
21/8+7/4
= {(21x4)+(7x8)} / 8x4

= 84+56/32
= 140/32
= 4.375 or 4 3/8
