About 15 years.
4 years at undergraduate school majoring in pre-med or some field of science. Examples: Biology, Chemistry, ect.
4 years of medical school
1 year internship
5-6 years of general surgery residency
2-3 years fellowship in transplant surgery
Heart transplant surgeons are always on call in case a heart is ready for their patients. After the residency training you would have to go into a fellowship. Cardiothoracic surgeons might be a transplant surgeon, depending on their specialty.
