Grade 3 is an E in a GCSE.

1 = C
2 = D
3 = E

If you took an 'O' level the equivalency to a GCSE is:

A = A
B = B
C = C

Actually looking at my original CSE certificate it states that Grade 1 is such that should I have take an O level in the same subject grade 1 is equal to either A, B or C. Grade 2 though is equal to O level D. I presume this fact got overlooked and most people presume Grade 1 is a C, however as Grade 1 is a high score, It is not possible to determine what that person would have acheived at O level.
