Under the constitution of 1849 elections of governors and other state officials were held every 2 years, in the odd-numbered years. Democrats won virtually every important election in California in the the 1850s except the state elections of 1855 which they lost largely because of the bitter rivalry between the two democratic leaders.

Both came to California in 1849 with the announced intention of being elected to the United States Senate. Tada.
