Sir Francis Drake was afflicted with a tropical disease in 1596, during an unsuccessful expedition in the Caribbean against the Spanish; according to some it was possibly yellow fever. On the 28th day of January in 1596 Drake left the world. In the pre-dawn hours, on board his flagship Defiance, Drake rose from his sick bed intending to wear his armor, so that he could die in honor and glory as a soldier. His body was laid to rest at sea, in a lead coffin, at Puerto Bello, Panama.
Sir Francis Drake was one of England's greatest explorers from the Elizabethan era. Drake, along with his colleagues, made possible England's process of colonization that contributed to the rapid and vast expansion of the British Empire over the following centuries.
