You may be able to get free CNA/GNA training by taking up a voluntary or trainee post in a nursing establishment such as a hospital, hospice or care home who will pay for your training in return for your work.  Alternatively you may be able to get a grant or scholarship to pay for your training at an approved college.

To register as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) you will need to complete a combination of theoretical study and on the job training from an approved organization.  Registration requirements for CNAs and GNAs to practice can vary from state to state so check the details for Maryland on the nurse aide registry website to find out what is required in Baltimore.

If you do not want to pay for CNA/GNA training at a college the best approach is to phone or visit local nursing institutions to ask if they take on trainees and provide training in return for a commitment to work there for a certain period of time.  If you cannot afford to pay for training you may be entitled to financial assistance such as a scholarship or grant, depending on your circumstances, so try searching grant databases or contacting community colleges to see if you are eligible.

The American Red Cross offer CNA and GNA training which can, in some cases, be free or at a lower cost than private colleges.  Contact details for your local chapter can be found on this website but be aware that you may need to contribute towards test and registration fees.

Hi,  Many nursing homes/ retirement homes who employ nurses aides, will also offer free training for your commitment to work for say, 6 months.  It would be worth your while to contact a few in your area.  Here is a link to a website where someone did just that!

Best way is to call some of the local nursing homes and ask them about this program.  You can also speak to your state registry for a listing of certified CNA training programs held in your region. You can find the state registry contact information at www.4cnas.com. On this website you can also find the listing of CNA training programs with respect to state.

Best of luck.
