As yet there has not been a date set for the next Nassau County Corrections Officer exam, but if you keep checking this site, you will be able to find out as soon as they post it: http://www.docs.state.ny.us/jobs/CO_Exam.html. You could also call the Department of Civil Service, who is responsible for administering the exam at 1-877-697-5627 (toll free).

To be a Correction Officer in the NYS Department of Correctional Services, you need to be 21 years of age on or before the date of your appointment. Correction Officer positions are located in various facilities throughout New York and you would be under the direct supervision of a higher ranking officer.

The role entails being responsible for the security, custody, safety and well-being of criminal offenders in State Correctional Facilities. You would have to make periodic rounds of assigned areas; maintain order within the facility; conduct searches for contraband and make necessary reports. You would need to advise inmates of the rules and regulations that govern the operation of the facility, and help them to resolve problems. The degree of responsibility for your own actions and decisions will be high.

You would also be required to play a major role in the rehabilitative process that relates to the incarcerated population; and there may be times when it will be necessary for you to carry firearms.

For the first 26 weeks of your training, the position carries a compensation of $36,420. Compensation for the final 26 weeks is $38,310, and as a Correction Officer you can expect to receive $43,867. You will also receive a lump sum if $200 after eight weeks of training.

Annual salary advancements are made depending on performance evaluations, and there are other adjustments such as pay for things such as pre-shift briefings.
