Reading is a complex and individual thing to do, but it must be learned at some point. Young pupils who are just beginning to read need to understand that reading is informative and it's also imaginative. Reading is largely visual, too - this is just another characteristic. Of course, you are required to have relatively good eye sight to be able to benefit from reading a book without having to use something like Braille. Reading is traditional and it is a great form of media that is never going to die. Whether the writing is on a newspaper or on a more modern screen, it doesn't matter, as the main characteristic of text and reading is that it is never going to be useless in the modern world.

When learning all of this, however, young pupils in school must also be taught about how reading is largely done for pleasure as well as business, and that by choosing the right thing to read, books and other sources of text can be a great form of pleasure. Many young children feel that reading is a chore as they are made to read things that they don't want to read. Hence, in order to preserve the enjoyable characteristic of reading then a child must be able to have the freedom to choose the book they want to read. If you allow the children to stop reading a book when they know it isn't interesting them then you are allowing them to make their own decisions and really understand what reading is all about. It's essential that a child is not put off reading in the future, as reading is going to be necessary during their education, their daily life and of course their career in the future.
