Certain behaviors are more likely to reflect activity in one hemisphere than in the other and this is known as lateralization.

  • What is lateralization?
Lateralization refers to the way the brain is structured and separated and how it communicates with each other. The brain is split into two hemispheres that most people refer to the right and the left. They are split by a longitudinal fissure but they are still connected due to the corpus callosum.

Despite the two cerebral hemisphere's being somewhat physically split, the structure of each of them is identical to the other. However it is important to keep in mind that despite the fact they are structured in the same way, the function is very different.

  • Generalizations
You have probably heard most people say that one side of the brain is used for a specific purpose while the other side of the brain is generally used for something else. While the two hemispheres do focus on certain aspects of the brain as opposed to the other, it is not so cut and dry as people suggest. There are certain dominant characteristics that may appear in the right side of the brain compared to the left, but the majority of characteristics are similar in both hemispheres.

  • Function
Many suggest that if you are left-handed you are generally using the left side of your brain more, and vice versa. This is not technically always the case, because some people who are right handed have had tendencies to use the left side of their brain when they carry out certain left handed tasks.

Interestingly, some studies have shown that people who are left handed tend to use the left hemisphere for language functions whereas the majority of right handed people use most of their left hemisphere for language function.
