'Indirect' means having intervening factors or persons or influences,and 'direct' means intend something to move towards a certain goal.They are antonym.

Oh I know that one easy!  Because we had a major test on characterization!  Enough with my blabbing!  Ok indirect is  the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions.

Direct is the writer makes
        direct statements about a character's personality and
        tells what the character is like.
