Very much so. Columbus wrote a lot about how he was happy that the native americans were getting sick and dying, how he thought they were ignorant savages and many other disparaging remarks. Almost all the other european explorers were the same. It's well documented how our government and government troops treated native americans during and after the westward expansion and for many years after. It hasn't been till fairly recently the history books in school have been starting to be updated to show these facts.
