Different scientists discovered pi simultaneously.....The ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, Romans, Greek and the Sumerians discovered PI.
They found that :
RATIO OF CIRCUMFERENCE TO DIAMETER IS CONSTANT=3.141592

It was much later when Archimedes found the actual application of Pi.
He wanted to find the area of a circle. He said that area of a circle was between the inscribed and circumscribed areas of a square. Later, he said if the sides of the inscribed and escribed polygon was kept on increasing, the approximation of the area of the circle was becoming more accurate.

Finally, an arbitary constant PI was used to give the most accurate approximation of this area. Area of a circle was termed=PI(Radius)(Radius).
