The derivative of x^3 is 3x^2.

If the function is a variable to a number, taking the derivative of that function would mean you multiply the entire function by whatever number is in the power, which is 3 in this case, and subtract 1 from the power, so 3-1 = 2. Therefore, 3 * [x^(3-1)] = 3x^2.
