Yes it is. To check if a fraction is in simplest form is to see what number can be divided by both. But for 3/100, only 1 can be divided by both, which still leaves 3/100.

In my college calculus classes we were not allowed calculators, at least not for tests Of course calculators were rather primitive then and people were still using slide rules. .So some of those fractions got rather hairy!

They sure did. My math teacher sometimes likes to give us problems that have trig functions, log/natural log functions, square roots, and mush them all together into one large, nasty function that we had to graph or find the derivative or anti-derivative of. They weren't necessarily difficult since I knew what to do, but they certainly were time-consuming!

Yes, calculus ( and many algebra problems ) can consume forests worth of paper!

If you want to be a scientist the math can lead you on long journeys that you did not really want to take. I, being a mediocre mathematician, struggled mightily with some of the quantifications I had to do just to get what I mistakenly though were easy answers

You would think the predator/prey relationship between musk ox and arctic wolves would be straightforward. Hardly! Without calculus the problems become intractable.
