Florence and then Siena are seen as the two cities that kicked off the Italian renaissance (or rinascimento as it is known in Italian).

Back then Italy was not one united country - but rather a collection of city-states.

And the ideas, ideals, art and scientific discoveries of Italian city states like Florence soon spread across Europe and the world.
