So we know Ebony spends $450 on rent. This is out of a total $2000 that she earns.

so we have a fraction to start with:

450/2000

Now the 2000 is what we would call 100% of her income, so we can say:

450/2000 = /100

Now we don't know what percent 450 represents, so we can put a variable in that space. It is the number we are trying to find out:

450/2000 = x/100

This creates an equivalent fraction with a variable.

If you're not sure how to find the value for variables in this situation, here's an explainer video with the different methods:

But we're going to do something called cross multiplication. Here's how it works:

450/2000 = x/100

2000x = 450*100

2000x = 45000

2000x/2000 = 45000/2000

x = 22.5

And there you have it!

Her rent is equal to 22.5% of her income.
