An STI is the abbreviation commonly used to describe sexually transmitted infections.
These are diseases which are passed from one person to another through sexual contact, generally when bodily fluids come into contact with a mucous membrane (found on the sexual organs in both sexes, as well as other parts of the body).
There are a number of different and widespread STIs, including:
- HIV/AIDS
- Gonorrhoea
- Syphilis
- Chlamydia
- Hepatitis
- Genital Herpes
To prevent the spread of STIs, people are advised to always use protection during sexual intercourse, especially between people that are not regular sexual partners.
