The average percentage of waste in a household that can be recycled is a massive 75%.

However! It is thought that in reality, only about 30% is transferred for recycling, which means there is a lot of trash ending up at landfills that can be reused, which is a real shame.

I think people are beginning to get into the habit of recycling their plastics, cardboard and glass. Having separate bins for these materials has meant that it has really been scored into our consciousness that we need to treat them differently to general waste.

Where the problem arises is when it comes to food wastage. Where a lot of food could, and should, be composted, it is being thrown into the general trash and ending up at landfills.

It is thought that in the US, 21.5 million tons of food waste is being sent to landfills every year. If this food was composted instead, the reduction in greenhouse gases would be the equivalent to taking over 2 million cars off the road.

So get composting! It's good for the planet, and for your garden!
