Explain why Bertrand Russel puts philosophy in between science and theology?

It's more than 50 years since I read Russell so I'm pretty rusty.

He was a mathematician and logician. He had no time for religion and rated it as worthless. Science, on the other hand, works with hard facts rather than mythology and its results can be demonstrated.

Philosophy, which attempts to explain so many of the big questions, falls somewhere between the two. How could it be otherwise?
