When I was a freshman, there was a guy in the dorm who had been in the service and spoke Japanese. He was generally an impressive individual, smart, and about 10 years older than us.

In the first few days, a number of people were sufficiently impressed enough to ask him to confirm that he could in fact speak the language.

When we would ask him to "say something in Japanese, he would reply---in Japanese---"What do you want me to say?"

So we set it up so the next person who asked him that question would reply with "Well, anything you want to."

He snapped pretty quickly, but the look on his face for that first millisecond was priceless.

Great story Tom. I just used Google translator for the above Japanese. I have enough of a time with English, let alone any other language.
