The easiest way to "understand" a pickup is as if it were an electric guitar mic. A guitar pickup is a magnet that picks up the vibrations of your strings and then converts them into an electrical signal that can be amplified to create sound, read more on Single Coil Pickups for Metal! A sensor magnet is usually made from a core material such as alnico or ferrite and then wrapped with coils of copper wire, but if you start changing these properties, i.e. Core material or number of coils, you can get different sounds!
