It took some time but I'm now ready to pursue earning certification in IT. What are some of the best certifications that employers like to see?

Certs are a dime a dozen. We prefer seeing experience over certification. I would say start off with Net +, Security +. Then start moving on to CCNA, MCSE, and/or RHCSA depending on which you think you'll be working with more.

More advance one would be AWS CSA, if you're planning on moving to Seattle or so me big city.

I'd say anything dealing with virtualization, network, and storage will be top notch these days.

But the main problem is that there's plenty of applicants with insane amount of certs but no real world knowledge to show for it. So if you are already working in an IT department ask for more tasks which you can learn from. Maybes start shadowing an actual project manager before getting your PMP if that's the route you take. Around here IT management requires a degree, mainly in Computer Science.
