Bottom line, it is basically a mess that even if stopped right now it would takes years to clean up.

It give me a headache. We have too many egotistical people there and not enough people who actually want to work for the people.

In my view, the Constitutional Republic as conceived by the Founding Fathers has at last ceased to function. All three branches of the Federal government are mired in stagnation, corruption, partisan self-interest and staggering leadership dysfunction, giving rise to a now metastasizing national failure.

I will predict that we are now watching the flailings and machinations of what will soon (and for long thereafter) be identified as the single worst presidency in US history. Considering the last two or three administrations, this is a very low bar indeed.

No matter, you have covered them in due course and I thank you for your candor, Walter.

There is so much more that could be said on this (not much of it positive), but so far, we've all summarized with a degree of concision that betrays the general dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.

I am hoping to draw as many (hopefully civil) views as our little crew here will see fit to share.

It's odd, isn't it? The impression that Trump and his acolytes and family gives to the world is one of chronic ineptitude.

Here in the UK, we have the worst government for 3 decades, just at a time when we need a good team in place.

France, disillusioned by the failures of the last president, have elected a young and very inexperienced politician who has already started making promises he will never be able to keep.

Of the major western powers, only Germany and Japan have anything like competent leaders, and even they preside over unhappy and disillusioned constituencies.

Are we seeing the decline of the "western way" of doing things? Is the Chinese model of governance the way to go?

I jest of course, but it is all very worrying.

Good points all, Ray. Western style governance seems to be overrun andinfected with ineptitude. I think the truly best leaders don't want the jobs anymore. The glamor is gone. They can do better for themselves in the private sector without the inherent scrutiny and pressures of public leadership.

"Disgusted" is the word that comes to mind.

If there is any silver lining, perhaps the electorate will realize that regardless of how much your chosen candidate wants to implement your ideas when in office, the integrity, values, and ethics of the person elected will ultimately determine whether you have elected the right one for the job.

Ultimately, a man's personal "philosophy of life" will determine what he does.

Trump is all for himself at any cost and he loves to seek vengeance against his ememies.

Hitler hated the Jews.

Neither motivation works well for the men in such positions.  It is their hubris.

From Wikipedia:

Hubris  describes a personality quality of extreme or foolish pride or dangerous overconfidence. In its ancient Greek context, it typically describes behavior that defies the norms of behavior or challenges the gods, and which in turn brings about the downfall, or nemesis, of the perpetrator of hubris.

Hubris is so seldom accompanied by desirable qualities like competence, empathy, honesty or grace.
How is its manifestation NOT a red flag disqualifier?
