If you are going into a counseling-related field then it is imperative that you study counseling theories. The various theories will give you the foundation that you need to develop your own theories and techniques. Most counselors don't find just one theory that they live by; they tend to pick and choose parts of many different theories that they find interesting or useful. It's good to be exposed to a variety of theories in order to have a solid base to work from.
