The bump is there for what are termed "touch" calculator operators. They never look down at the keys, so can always find the "home" or 5 key by feeling the bump.

It is there so that when you are typing, you can locate the numbers more efficiently without having to look down at the keys to see where you are at. This is also done with the main keyboard. The letter f has a bump, and the letter j has a bump. These bumps are to be found with the first index finger of either hand, the left index to the f, and the right index to the j. Hope you have a better concept of this now.
