It is believed that the sphinx was built in honour of the pharaoh "Khufu"'s son, Khafre. They also believe that it was built to protect the two pyramids built by Kufu and Khafre from burglary.

The Ancient Egyptians greatly honored felines (cats), so they built a sphinx to honor their gods, whom the believed were related to felines. The cat was greatly honored because they caught mice and other pests, and they are somewhat fierce and are somewhat like warriors.
