It really depends on the way bone was broken or fractured. For instance, if it was broken lengthways, this may take longer to heal properly. It will also depend on your own body’s recovery process and how well you look after your body. By eating well and keeping off your feet to allow the bone to rest, it is more likely to heal up within a shorter length of time. Some people who have stayed off their feet and relaxed have seen big toe bones heal in around four weeks, although this may not be the case for others.

Some people may find they have to wait as long as three months for the bone to completely heal up and for the pain to completely subside. This is usually only in very severe cases where the bone has been fractured in such a way that it takes it longer to recover. The big toe will usually take a while longer to heal as it is a bone that is constantly in use to help keep the body upright. Getting some real rest and keeping your weight off it will help speed up the process.

Having an X-ray will help determine how long the bone will need to heal as it will identify where it has been fractured and if it extends to a joint. For those fractures that extend to a joint, it will take longer to heal and it may even lead to an even greater risk of arthritis in that area later in life. Depending on how badly broken your toe is, your doctor will be able to give you the best advice on treatment once an X-ray has been taken.

I'm a runner with a broken big toe. I let nothing keep me down from running. Yet It's almost 5 weeks since I broke it(non-displaced)nd the thing is so sore I still can't walk briskly on it. Tried a little quick stepping around the block and was in agony, now it is swelling again. These buggers take waaay longer than they should. I say seven weeks of almost complete rest, and slow walking; get stiff flip flops. Every kind of shoe just presses down on it. This absolutely stinks, especially for a runner.

As soon as trauma happens to the body, it starts healing itself. (I know your pain here, broke my pinky toe several times now) Typically, depending on the amount of damage done to the bone, it can take anywhere between 6-10 weeks for the bone to mend, sometimes longer if your body does not heal quickly. If you think you did some major damage though, you should go and see a doctor. Good luck, hope this helps.

A big toe is more important to you in standing and walking than any of the other toes, so breaking it is more disabling. Have you had an x-ray? If you are walking about with an untreated fracure then you have extraordinary pain tolerance. Possibly you injured it, but didn't break it? I think you need to find out for sure.

I hope you went to the hospital to have it seen too.
I tripped on a pot hole in 1997, my ankle swell so I went to the hospital where they put me in a plaster for six weeks.
What they didn't find out was I had also broken my big toe , this I didn't realize until a year later when the big toe kept moving outwards.
At the time I was under a surgeon for my fingers, who told me it was best to leave the toe. However, since then I have had such trouble getting shoes that fit, even now they still don't fit and I have only one pair of awful medical shoes, I can't do this or that, my toe turns out towards 3' o'clock and now the other toes are also turning.
So if your toe is doing the same as mine, I would certainly have it sorted.

Shattered my big toe two weeks ago and badly dislocated toe next to it. 200 kilos falling from 3 feet did the job nicely. Two lots of surgery including skin graft for impact damage now I have 3 temporary 4inch pins in my big toe and one in the toe along side. 10 weeks minimum limping like an idiot then physio etc. Hope they knock me out to remove the pins. Thank god I did it at work so getting compensated .

I broke my left big toe a month ago, and was told after follow up with the doctor that it's not healing as it should and now have to have surgery.  I've been walking on it and going about normally since it broke (broke it in 3 places).....so I'd say it depends on the WAY it heals....

It all basically depends upon how badly broken it is. If it is a jagged break for example it could take around one month to heal. However, most of the time breaks take around 6-8 weeks to heal.

You do not always have to go to the hospital. Whilst a broken toe is extremely painful, it can be soothed with ice and by wearing footwear such as flip flops. You could also strap the toe to the toe next to it if you wanted to and that would give it extra support.

Overall it should take roughly 1-2 months to heal just remember to make yourself as comfortable as possible in that time.
