European schools had French as a must have subject in the previous centuries.

My local used book store has a few "old" textbooks. (Actually, they are from the era in which I went to school. Lol) Your local library may also have school texts as old as you like.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic were taught. Along with English (the structure and vocabulary of the language), history, rhetoric, literature.

I find the level of instruction refreshing in the old texts (1940 and before). They tended to get right to it, and the expectations were quite high relative to those today. Students spent a lot less of their lives indoors, so generally had a much better sense of how the world worked.
