Instrument is a device which requires proper skills for making the proper use out of a particular instrument. An instrument can be anything such as a small musical instrument, small pliers, screws etc. However equipment is always is a machine or sets of instruments necessary to carry out a task or activity. Both the terms are quite similar but distinction can be made in the usage of the machines and instruments. Various instruments can be used to make one equipment to perform specialized tasks.
