An example of a medial vowel sound would be the 'ee' in 'week'. Medial vowel sounds are the vowels that are found within the middle of a word.

To teach a medial vowel sound more effectively, interactive illustrations or games can help in making a lesson much more fun to the young mind of a child. Here are some ideas.

  • Sound Switches: Gather children around a circle. Say an easy word that contains an identifiable medial vowel sound, for example the 'a' in 'cat'. Let each child add another word by substituting the previous word's medial vowel sound. For example, after 'cat' another child can say 'cot', 'cut' or 'coat'. Keep on coming up with fresh examples until each child masters the concept.

  • Matching Game: Make some sets of flash-cards with words that match each other containing an identical medial vowel sound, for example 'map' and 'cat'. Illustrate these flash-cards with different pictures for each of the words. Let each child match up the pairs of flash-cards containing the same sets of medial vowel sounds. The children could also enjoy playing Concentration by flipping the cards over and matching the pairs of cards from memory.
  • Vowel Sounds Picture Cards: Give each of the children a matching set of picture cards with strings of five or six words that contain the identical medial vowel sounds. Write out the different medial vowel sounds on one side and illustrate each of the words on the other side. For example the cards that could have 'gate', 'vase' and 'tail' would all be saying 'long A' at the back. Let the children start off with single words and then let them recognize the matching word. Line up these cards. The children can check their own work by looking at the backs of these cards.
