53 is about average. The asvab is scored as a percentile. Meaning 99 is the highest you can achieve. If you were to score a 99, thatd make you in the top 1 percent. So you probably want to aim higher. I scored an 91 which gave me the choice of any job the navy has to offer. Its better to score higher.
To score a 91 you got to be a genius...or have past expeience in some of the things they ask you. So if you were an electrition, engeenier, been in college, etc. Then yeah shoot higher. If not. Most you'ld really be able to get is about 50-60. I myself got a 59. But take into account that 70% of the people who take the ASVAB score 50 or higher. In reality you are doing above average. The lowest they'll accept you is at 30-32ish.
Making a 91 doesn't mean you're a genius. I myself, am a genius and I only made a 51 because I've been out of school for so long.
