AKC is the oldest pet registry in America. Other pet registries like American Pet Registry would be acceptable if they were only used for pets but the fact is that they are mainly intended for use by breeders which allows substandard breeding.

The AKC is the oldest, but the APR has been around for almost 40 years. As far as substandard breeders, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Do you know how many puppy mills have AKC registered dogs? The AKC is out to make money, not to regulate the breeders, just like EVERY kennel club. If you judge whether your puppy came from a reputable breeder by the the kennel club it's registered in, you're a fool and should reconsider getting a puppy.

I agree with the other pet lover. AKC has several puppy mills where many of their litters are dyeing. AKC is a big money game. If I have a dog that is registered AKC I also register them as CKC because they do not seem to be out for just money. And they get their paperwork done correctly. Also when you call CKC you get someone who can actually speak good ENGLISH. I have called several times to the AKC because of their paperwork, I can barely understand the person on the phone due to their words.

I bought a beautiful English bulldog puppy who happens to be APR registered.  But to be honest, I wouldn't care if she didn't come with papers.  She may not be from champion blood lines, but she's everything I've ever wanted as far as appearance and personality goes.  I don't understand why everyone gets so wrapped up in the AKC vs. All the other pet registries unless you are going to show the dogs.  All of them to include the AKC registries are just trying to make money.

There are two main reasons for getting a registered dog. One is for breeding purposes, and the other is to make sure the you are actually getting a specific breed of dog.

I agree with Dogloverwi . I also have a APR registered pomeranian and she is just gorgeous and healthy and a great dog. I don`t understand what the big deal is about AKC registrations. I guess they are trying to monopolise the market and they want to make more money.

APRI holds dog shows just the same as AKC...AKC has been around longer and of course the dog registries that branched away have been scrutinized. I relate this to Catholic church VS protestant religions. Which one is correct? For those people who show their dogs in APR they have the highest respect for what it is they are doing. No diff than AKC. The last time I was in the pet store EVERY pup was AKC registered. Puppy mills are everywhere and they are using EVERY registry.
