The 5th edition of the APA manual says it is OK to use "I" if you are the sole author of the paper, and to make it clear when opinions, experiences etc are your own. However, a lot of colleges and universites still seem to prefer the older convention of saying "the author" wherever possible, so it may be advisable to check with your teacher.
