India is a land of myth and legend, and is home to what is believed to be the longest and one of the greatest epics of all time—the Mahabharata. It is one of the most important Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It consists of over 74,000 verses, long prose passages (approximately a 1.8 million words) which make it the longest epic poem written in the world. It contains the Bhagavad Gita, which is an important text for Hindus.

The Epic of King Gesar is considered the last living epic in the world. A lot of scholars also regard this Tibetan folk epic as the longest epic in the entire world. The epic revolving around fearless king Gesar is thought to be around 1000 years old. Tibet has collected almost 300 hand-written or woodcut reproductions of this epic. There have been over three million copies printed of the Tibetan version of king Gesar's epic.
