At the time when the divisions were the biggest, blacks had no rights in the south and were made into slaves.
On the flip side, in the north, they had very few rights and were usually paid but often shorted in compensation compared to a white doing the same job.
So north was slightly better, a brighter future in many regards, but far from utopian.
